With the range of current technologies and procedures available, people don’t want to, or more importantly, don’t have to, go under the knife. If your goal is to restore your youthful glow, you can use a combination of non-surgical procedures to achieve a natural looking facelift without surgery, even well into your 60’s. In many cases, you can even schedule the appointment during your lunch break and people will never know.
Non-surgical options for facelifts fall into three categories: replenishing lost volume, resurfacing the superficial skin and tightening deeper tissue. Generally, a range of treatments are used in combination to achieve your overall facial rejuvenation goals.
Botox, also known as Botulinum toxin, is one of the the most commonly used non surgical treatment. Botox is a neuro-modulator injected into the muscle, which causes it to temporarily relax. The relaxed muscle can no longer contract and therefore cannot create a wrinkle. Botox injections effectively treat fine lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows, forehead creases, crow’s feet around the eyes, and other wrinkles in the upper face region. And if you have loose skin creating banding in the neck, sometimes Botox is the answer.
Results from Botox can be seen within three to seven days for forehead and eye areas, two to three weeks for jaw areas, and the effect typically last three to six months. Therefore, you will need ongoing treatments to stop wrinkles from returning. For deeper wrinkles, it may take several treatments to achieve the desired outcome. There are no serious side effects, the most common being temporary muscle weakness, along with mild redness, irritation and swelling at the injection site which usually goes away within a day or two.
2) Dermal Fillers
Falling cheeks and new jowls are commonly caused by loss of facial volume creating the illusion of sagging skin. Volume can be restored without surgery in just a few minutes and you will look like you had a facelift.
Dermal fillers are used to fill lines and spaces, plumping them up to increase volume. They are more commonly used for the lower parts of the face – the cheeks, the lines that run from your nose to your mouth (nasolabial folds), the lips, the lines running from the sides of the mouth down to the chin (marionette lines), indentations from scars, or any other sunken areas of the face. When necessary, they can also be used under the eyes and in the temples.
Dermal Fillers like Juvederm can be used to smooth out these static wrinkles and is made from hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a natural substance in the skin that delivers nutrients. It helps the skin retain moisture and softness and adds volume. Fillers help to plump the skin and replace the volume that was lost over time, filling out the wrinkles and smoothing the skin. Results from fillers are immediate and can last 9-12 months, some even promise to last up to 24 months, with little to no downtime. The majority of people experience little side effects, though few can be sensitive to treatment or experience allergic reactions.
3) Fat Transfer
An alternative to dermal fillers is fat transfer. Fat can be grafted from other areas of your body, then reinjected into the face to strategically address the volume loss. Fat transfer can be used to address laugh lines, smile lines, crow’s feet, lips, acne scars, skin depressions, concave cheeks, and any other sunken areas of the face.
Palm Beach facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Jean-Paul Azzi suggests one of the greatest advantages of fat transfer is that it produces very natural-looking long term results, lasting forever after being injected.
And since you are using your own fat, the body accepts it more readily, reducing the chance of allergic reactions or rejections. The only downfall is it can be time consuming to obtain and prepare fat compared to using the prepackaged dermal fillers outlined above.
4) Radio frequency (RF) Treatment
Radio frequency (RF) Facial Treatment is a technique that uses RF energy to heat tissue and stimulate sub-dermal collagen production in order to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin. The technique induces tissue re-modelling and production of new collagen and elastin. The process provides an alternative to facelift and other cosmetic surgeries. The radio frequency facial therapy has been approved by the FDA as a non-surgical treatment for problematic skin imperfections. This treatment requires no downtime. Best of all, results are immediately noticeable
Radio frequency (RF) Facial Treatment works through radio wave currents that penetrate deep into the dermis (deepest layer of the skin) and subcutaneous layers of the skin causing tightening of the underlying tissues showing a difference with fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture. This heat stimulates collagen production, improves blood circulation, oxygenation and healthy cell turnover. The overall result is tighter, brighter, healthier skin with a significant reduction in wrinkles.
5) Thread Lift
A thread facelift is a safe, convenient alternative to traditional facelift surgery. Designed to be less invasive, it can reduce sagging around the cheeks, jawline, and neck more quickly and with less risk than the conventional approach. Special threads are used during this facelift to discreetly hold repositioned skin and facial tissue in place after surgery. And while thread lifts generally produce noticeable results almost immediately and with less risk and inconvenience than more intensive procedures, thread lift costs are quite reasonable compared to traditional options.
A thread facelift is a convenient, less invasive alternative to traditional facelifts, designed for people experiencing early signs of aging, such as minor facial sagging. This innovative facelift procedure can be performed in just one or two hours, often without anesthesia. During a thread facelift, the cosmetic surgeon inserts thin threads into the face through tiny incisions made in the targeted area. These threads attach to the skin tissue and are then pulled back to lift and smooth the face. Almost immediately, treated areas will be raised slightly, eliminating sagging and giving patients a rejuvenated appearance. Because patients usually remain fully conscious during the procedure, they can approve the look of their thread lift while the surgeon works.
